The WA V8 Dirt Modified State Title incorporating the Round 2 of the DMA 5 Star Series was run on the 27th February at Coates Hire Geraldton City Speedway. The event was one of the hottest contested titles in recent years and the Silverware is again heading to Queensland with Kevin Britten adding the WA 1 to his current Australia 1 and NSW 1 trophy cabinet. It was an all interstate podium with Queensland taking the top 3 steps with Ray Klarich and Lee McKinnell coming in 2nd and 3rd respectively, and was rounded out with the Victorian Steve Milthorpe coming home 4th. Brad Cooper was the first WA driver coming home 5th.
The night started out with the grand parade and hot laps, and unfortunately for Peter Cox this would be end of his night with the 24 car loosing oil pressure. The first round of heats were taken out by Daniel Kennedy and Kevin Britten. Steve Milthorpe was an early casualty in heat 1b after a front end issue saw the Vic 9 on the infield after a strong early showing. The second round of heats was an all Queensland affair with Ray Klarich and Kevin Britten taking out heat victories showing that it didn’t take long for the visitors to become accustomed to the Geraldton track.
There was short break between rounds to allow the pits to be opened up to the general public allowing them to view the cars and speak to the drivers leaving many kids with lasting memories of the night. Round 3 saw Steve Milthorpe put his stamp on the event taking out heat 3a. Defending Champion Daniel Forbes suffered a DNF in his heat due to a right front brake seizure. Local hard charger Peter Forbes put WA back in the winner’s circle with a win in heat 3b. The sportsman of Martika Pinker was another casualty during heat 3b after contact with another car ended her night with terminal front end damage.
The remaining teams made the required changes and rolled out to start the 30 lap feature race it was again an all Queensland front row with Kevin Britten on pole with Ray Klarich on the outside. The highest qualifying WA driver was Daniel Kennedy’s 56 out of 4. The action was on from the drop of the green as teams battled hard to gain positions on the leaders. All teams raced hard and fast on the Geraldton track but in the end there could only be 1 winner, with Kevin Britten taking the chequered flag.
DMAWA would like to congratulate all teams for making this one of the best titles in recent years and thank the Interstate drivers and teams for making the long trek west. In a fitting tribute all cars carried a sticker and flew yellow and blue ribbons to honour life member Geoff Nicholls who recently passed away.
